GST & duty, explained simply
Australia's rules, straight from official sources.
A$1,000 or less
No duty and no GST at the border. GST (10%) is generally collected at checkout by GST-registered sellers, platforms or agents, and it includes shipping.
ATO source →Over A$1,000
The importer pays GST, customs duty and other charges at the border. This also applies when several cheap items ship together in one parcel.
ATO source →Duty on Chinese goods
Under ChAFTA, Chinese-originating goods are duty-free unless listed in Schedule 12. You need a Certificate or Declaration of Origin; goods that don't qualify pay the general rate.
ABF · Schedule 12 · DFATSimplified model: customs value = item + domestic shipping + agent fees. Over A$1,000: GST = 10% × (customs value + duty + international shipping).
